The presence of long-chained polymer molecules in a fluid fundamentally changes its flow behavior. Such molecules are naturally present in many biofluids, foodstuffs, or fluids relevant to the chemical industry. When a liquid bridge pinches off, polymers resist the pinching, leading to long-lived filaments. We propose to calculate the thinning of thefilament, to learn more about the stretching of polymers in the flow. When long-chained surfactant molecules are added to a drop of water on a solid surface, it spreads many times more rapidly than any pure fluid could. We propose to investigate changes in surface properties (in particular stiffening) that could explain this remarkable behaviour.
