In a wide range of applications optical aberrations resulting from the propagation through a partially random media can seriously limit the optical performance of the instrumentation. The classic example of this problem is astronomical imaging through a turbulent atmosphere but this problem is also encountered in many other areas, for instance, in biomedical imaging (in the eye) and in line of sight communications.Adaptive optics (AO) uses a deformable optical element (usually a mirror) to correct for some of these aberrations and restore the imaging quality. In order to achieve this a wavefront sensor is required to measure the aberration.This project will develop a new high performance wavefront sensor based on custom silicon chips. These will be able to operate at higher speeds than conventional systems (based on high speed cameras) and be able to significantly reduce correction latency and thus significantly improve the performance of AO systems. Furthermore the use of customised sensors will allow the detection of aberrations using modulated light which will allow the rejection of background light and allow AO systems to operate in daylight conditions which is a significant advantage for sensing in the eye and for line of sight communications.
