The chief aim of this project is to develop the Ugi reaction ( afour component reaction between an isonitrile, a carboxylic acid, an amine and a ketone) as a means of linking kinetically stable lanthanide complexes to other metal complexes or peptide based targeting vectors.We intend to exploit the Ugi reaction in a new area, using it as a tool to link together components of more complicated assemblies. A range of applications will be investigated, including:the formation of lanthanide containing bioconjugates, which can be used for diagnostic luminescent imaging or MRI of disease statesthe preparation of new luminescent lanthanide conjugates, containing antenna groups which absorb light in the visible region of the spectrum and emit in the near IR.the preparation of polynuclear complexes where the metal ions are bound in kinetically table binding sites.The complexes that we will make using this chemistry will have a variety of applications in medicine and industry, for example as imaging agents in the diagnosis of disease and in optical communications technology for the telecommunications industry.
