Microbubbles of the size of blood cells have considerable potential for enhancing parts of ultrasonic images, e.g. blood vessels or tumours, and also for the improved delivery of drugs or genes to specific sites in tissue. The full exploitation of microbubble agents will only be achieved once there is a full understanding of the bubble/ultrasound interaction for microbubbles freely suspended in blood or attached to blood vessel walls. The applicants aim to extend their current research on freely suspended bubbles to bubbles attached to tissues. The latter is the situation most relevant to the imaging of blood vessel wall disease and drug delivery. The objectives of the grant are to develop accurate techniques to measure the ultrasonic behaviour of bound microbubbles and to introduce Atomic Force Microscopy for the measurement of the viscoelastic properties of bubble shells. Both the ultrasonic and AFM results will directly contribute to our understanding of microbubble properties and to our mathematical modelling of the microbubble behaviour.
