Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal aims at clarifying the dynamic processes in the adsorption and formation of organic molecules on extended surfaces. The main objective is bridging the gap between high-level theoretical calculations of an ideal ground-state, and the thermal and pressure conditions in chemical reactors. The developed methods offer a tool to advance many different investigations on the nature and organisation of organic molecules on a variety of surfaces. It is important to emphasise that the concept is already proven for the adsorption of small molecules. To create a viable method for the technologically important catalysis in fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals, it needs to be refined and extended to much larger and more complex systems. The programme will also explore the ability of surfaces to recognise chirality in the critical step from the molecular gas phase to the adsorption on chiral centres at extended surfaces.
