The efficient and stereoselective construction of quaternary carbon centres remains a formidable challenge to synthetic organic chemists. In this project a new strategy for the synthesis of these important structural motifs, based on enantioselective desymmetrization, is developed. The key reactions are a family of related enantioselective palladium catalysed cross-coupling processes. The early part of the project is concerned with the identification and optimization of the best catalyst and ligand system for a prototype reaction. The effects of the structure of the substrate on both the selectivity and efficiency of the process will then be examined. The final section of the research will focus on developing new reactions that can be employed in the process so that variously substituted products confining the key quaternary centre can be prepared. On completion of the project a new, useful, robust synthetic method will have been developed.
