The aim of this project is to explore the use of state-of-the-art electronics and systems design in the realisation of a reconfigurable module-based system capable of 3D ultrasonic imaging. Each module in the system can be thought of as an autonomous tile, containing a 2D transmit/receive array and electronics. The electronics will be capable of beam steering and focusing of coded signals on transmission, reception signal amplification and digitisation, and inter-tile communication. In any given implementation, all the tiles will be identical, as indicated in Figure 2.1, and will be capable of assembly into larger macro-arrays, that we will call mosaics, in 1 D, 2D and even 3D with appropriate packing pieces. Within each mosaic, one tile will act as a master and the others as slaves. The master file will communicate with a remote base-station via either a cable or wireless link. The tiles will be capable of battery-powered operation. The advantages of the proposed system over current technology are versatility, adaptability and, where one user may have several applications, low cost. The system will rely on modularity, reconfigurability and scalability - design concepts that are applied routinely in microelectronics - to achieve properties that will uniquely advance ultrasound technology and practice.
