Summary on Grant Application Form
This project is concerned with the synthesis and characterisation of transition-metal cyanides and ranges from the fundamental to the speculative. The work includes structural studies of simple binary cyanides such as those of nickel, palladium and platinum, whose structures surprisingly are still unknown. This part of the research should provide primary information for future textbooks and research. In addition, new types of cyanide materials with open-framework structures will be prepared, incorporating amongst other metals copper, silver and gold, and their physical properties investigated. These new framework materials will provide structural analogues of naturally occurring materials e.g. zeolites with anticipated technological applications in the areas of ion exchange, catalysis and ionic conductivity, currently of widespread interest to materials scientists in academia and industry.
