This proposal is for the continuation of the highly successful European Forum for processors of large grain (RE)BCO superconductors (EFFORT}, which was supported initially by EPSRC in 2000 (RG31271). Bulk superconductors offer real potential for high current engineering applications due to their ability to trap magnetic fields significantly higher than the fields achievable with rare earth and iron-based ferromagnets, which are limited by their saturation magnetisation to practical values of around 1T. Sixteen European laboratories are actively involved in the processing of bulk materials for both fundamental studies and the development of applications. Other than the previous EFFORT project, collaboration between these laboratories to date has been limited to a small number of European funded projects which are necessarily selective and do not involve more than one or two laboratories. This contrasts starkly with the situation in Japan and the USA where information between the major laboratories is exchanged freely one larger, more organised scale. Based on the successful format of the earlier project, it is proposed to hold 2 one-day meetings per year for a three year period at which representatives of the labs involved describe their latest research and discuss collaboration in an open and small group forum. Each meeting will be held at a different participating institute and will in dude a laboratory tour. The minutes, future business and general activity of the Forum will be disseminated mainly via an established Web page constructed specifically for this purpose. It is envisaged that the Forum will continue to increase the effectiveness of European research in this field, reduce duplication, increase competetiveness with non-European countries and support visits of young researchers to participating laboratories.
