|
Molecular Magnetism is currently a topic of great, and growing, international interest. For example, the Deutsche Forschung Gemeineschaft in Germany has recently organised an initiative to promote research in this area, and there are powerful programmes in Japan, the USA and many European countries. The UK's position has been slightly anomalous in the 1980s and 1990s, with comparatively few groups involved, but with those groups (chiefly that of Day in the 1980s, with an increasing number through the 90s) producing world-leading results. This proposal seeks to promote collaboration and exchange of ideas within the UK community, so that we can increasingly compete with other countries in this area. It features all the significant UK scientists working predominantly in the area, and includes scientists at all stages of their careers - from world-leaders to recent appointments.The programme will organise a series of workshops - to provide training for post-graduate and post-doctoral workers, meetings - to exchange results and discuss new ideas, and will provide small amounts of funding to allow less well-established groups access to equipment in the better equipped laboratories, e.g. by funding cryogens for experiments at liquid helium temperatures.
