Summary on Grant Application Form
The primary aim of this proposal is to develop new theoretical techniques for describing the nonlinear optical interaction of pulses with very few optical cycles. To this end, we will work both on refinements to the long-established envelope techniques, as well as the direct solution of Maxwell's equations, using Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD methods). With rapid progress in the generation of few-cycle pulses, and the rapid push into the attosecond regime, new methods of modelling nonlinear optical processes are urgently needed; without these, appropriate tools for analysing experimental results will not be available. In parallel, we will continue to develop sophisticated models of femtosecond optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) in an effort to improve the understanding of these important practical devices. Specifrically, we will construct OPO models that reproduce as closely as possible the behaviour of laboratory systems at the universities of St Andrews and Heriot-Watt, where we have long-standing collaborative links We will seek to take proper account of transverse (focused beam) effects in nonlinear interactions of this kind.Semiclassical techniques are appropriate for describing the relatively intense pulses involved in nonlinear optical experiments in the laboratory. We will seek to develop a quantum theory of few-cycle pulses for which there is also a need.
