Summary on Grant Application Form
This programme describes a feasibility/pump-priming study which aims to demonstrate how purpose-designed dopants can lead to optically-driven cholesteric displays. Our dopants are designed so that their low energy absorption band will exhibit a large circular dichroism and have high helicaltwisting power. Irradiation with circularly polarised light will therefore establish a photostationary state in which there is a sufficient and controlled (by choice of irradiation wavelength or partial circular polarisation) excess of one enantiomer in the liquid crystal mixture, and hence an induced twist with associated selective reflection (colour). We believe that specifically substituted 1,1'-binaphthalenes are ideally suited to this role.
