Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal seeks funding to formally establish a cluster of researchers and professionals (already in existence informally) to initiate meaningful discussions towards the development of a prototype integrated response system for fire related emergencies (namely FireGrid) based on a fully coupled computational tool. It is anticipate that such a tool will provide continuous super-real-time predictions of the evolution of a building fire, movement of smoke and other toxins, occupant response and the response of the structure. These predictions will be continuously updated based on data received from a large array if sensors in the building. The predictions will be filtered through a planning and execution support system to enable simple action instructions to be passed to the emergency responders and active control systems installed at the location of the emergency. The throughput times envisaged (seconds/minutes) for an effective response to a major emergency would only be possible with HPC and high speed-high volume GRID based infrastructure. A large group of researchers and professional in UK, Continental Europe and USA were collaborated in 2002-2003 to develop the concept of FireGrid which was then submitted as a research proposal to the EPSRC e-Science Pilot Projects call in March 2003 as an outline proposal, and then a full proposal in May 2003. This proposal seeks to formalise this grouping and enable extensive consultations and discussions to take place in order to identify clearly the research needs and user requirements for developing FireGrid.
