Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal concerns the development of a range of microstructured and nanostructured material/waveguide fabrication and processes. The work is focussed on four key areas of photonics technology: planar lightwave materials and devices, the development of practical compound glass fibres, microstructured silica fibres (holey and photonic bandgap) and laser direct-write techniques applied to photonic materials. Particular promise for a range of active/tuneable waveguide components is shown by structures with high/low optical nonlinearity, composite/integrated microstructures made from different materials and direct UV writing for photonic circuits. The proposed research will result in a new generation of photonic devices of unprecedented performance and functionality with application in telecommunications, high-power lasers and beam delivery, industrial processing, laser projection and display, bio-sensing and bio-imaging.The proposal covers the science and technology to develop the materials and processes in the ORC clean rooms.
