In a wide range of manufacturing situations, feedstock material, stored in rolls, is processed in a continuous manner. For example, in the manufacture and subsequent processing or conversion of aluminium foil, thin plastic film and paper products, systems of rollers are used to convey the material to the point(s) of conversion, at which it may be coated, slit and re-spooled, glued and combined with other rolled feedstock material, printed on, chemically treated or formed and cut. Following discussions with several major rolled product manufacturers and users we highlighted a generic problem which manifests itself as poor flatness, (bagginess) of the material. Consequently, and through EPSRC funding, we have created both method and machinery to measure the degree of flatness of this material whilst it is passing through a roller system. Responses from relevant industries indicate that there is clear commercial potential for such a system. However, they tell us that an integrated system must be produced which would be more suitable as an industrial demonstrator, rather than the current research tool. This project aims to create such an industrial demonstrator, utilising the successful outcomes of our previous research work and subsequent initial trials experience. Concurrently, a marketing exercise will be undertaken which aims to establish a clearly defined commercial exploitation path.
