Summary on Grant Application Form
This is the first attempt to create a dedicated tool, the numerical tank, able to investigate by direct numerical simulation of nonlinear wave evolution (DNWS) a wide range of fundamental issues concerned with statistical description of randomm wave fields. The specific objectives which have never been addressed include: elucidation of the role of non-resonant interactions; direct check of the quasi-Gaussiantity hypothessis and establishing the range of validity of the kinetic eqautions, identification of specific mechanisms leading to the field non-Gaussianity, investigation of long-time evolution of higher moments of the field and role of higher order resonant interactions, and, at last, the inherent limitations of DNWS. DNWS is the only way to address these problemsThe DNWS will be based upon an original algoritm developed by the authors and based upon integration of the Zakharov equation. Apart from the fundamental aspects there are also practical implications: we expect an improvement in some aspects of wave forecating, especially for the narrowband wave field and the probability of the freak waves. The implications of the expected results are not confined to water waves; the project outcome will considerably advance our understanding of fundamentals of nonlinear random wave fields in general, with possible applications in fluids and plasmas.The project will be carried out by concerted efforts of Keele University (Prof. V.Shrira), European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts(Dr. P.Jansen) and University College London (Prof. J. C.R.Hunt). The supercomputers at ECWMF and CSAR (Manchester) will be employed for the simulations. The total cost of the project is J148,863.
