Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this proposal is to enable long-term collaborative relationships to be established with Japanese nuclear institutions in high temperature gascooled reactor (HTGR) technology, and to reinforce the international reputation of Manchester University as a centre for research in nuclear technology. Visits will be made to the laboratories in Japan to ascertain the state-of-the-art in HTGR research and to identify potential areas of collaboration. Workshops will be held in Japan and the UK to discuss ideas and to draft research proposals. The chief collaborator in this project is expected to be the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute which has an active and wide-ranging research programme in HTGR technology. The possible outcomes could be: publication of report(s) detailing the state-of-the-art in nuclear graphite and heat transfer research in Japan and the common research interests of Japan and the UK; new research proposals submitted to funding bodies in each country; exchange of staff, students or visiting researchers and wider participation of the University of Manchester in international HTGR research programmes and conferences. The results of the meetings and workshops will be dissemminated in a seminar to a broad audience and published in appropriate places. The partners will also participate in appropriate events to publicise the visits and the UK Science and Technology represented by the UK delegates.Funding is requested for travel and subsistence in both directions and to cover costs for organising the workshops and seminar.
