The designer of lighting has a variety of lamps of different spectral power distribution, and hence colour characteristics, to choose from. These colour characteristics are not accounted for in the conventional assessment of how much light (illuminance) based on the Standard Photopic Observer, but do affect the perception of interior spaces, i.e. their brightness and clarity. Dr Fotios' research suggests that consideration of lamp colour quality may lead to better lit spaces with a reduction in energy consumed by the lighting. This research uses large numbers of observers to compare spaces when illuminated by light sources of different spectral power distribution. A spectroradiometer is required to enable accurate measurement of the spectral power distribution of light sources, a key characteristic of different sources of light, which will then be used to develop a model for predicting the brightness-illuminance relationship.
