Summary on Grant Application Form
The Leeds MBE system was commissioned in 1990 and the main growth facility has not been upgraded since that time. During the summer an extensive overhaul of the main vacuum chamber was completed resulting in a much improved base pressure of < 10-11 mbar and growth pressure of -5 x 10 1 mbar. We wrote new growth-control software and built a new sample platform incorporating a shuttering system so that 6 samples can now be grown in one cycle. Four years ago an in-situ UHV-STM was added and is in the process of being converted to a ballistic electron emission microscopy (BEEM) tool as part of our spin injection work. The MBE machine is directly involved in 7 on-going EPSRC and EU funded projects representing collaborations in about 15 EU research laboratories and total funding of more than 2.5M. After years of keeping the machine running very cost effectively, we have reached the point where it is no longer possible to feasible to keep refurbishing old equipment. Several items of equipment are beyond repair and this small application is to keep the facility running.
