The proposed research in collaboration with Millennium Chemicals aims to explore a novel soda-ash roasting method for the beneficiation of titani-ferous ores to upgrade it to concentrations of 95% Ti02 and higher for their subsequent use as feedstock for FBCR. We aim to investigate the preferential separation of minor (Nb, Ta) and trace elements (U, Th) from the ore body during the chemical attack at elevated temperatures and during acid and aqueous leaching. The neutralised chloride waste contains radio-active U, Th, and valuable Nb. In the project we aim to recover Nb via soda-ash roasting ore of the neutralised FBCR residue, and at the same time immobilise the radio-active oxides in a stable matrix of Ca(Ti, Zr)03. We also aim to carry out the life-cycle and environmental analysis of the residues in collaboration with MC. The use of Nb205 as a value-added product will be studied in relation to formulating a new type of colour-stabilised dye. The enriched synthetic rutile with 95% and higher concentrations of Ti02 will be studied for characterising the chlorination reaction in the FBCR at the MC's lab at Stallingborough.
