Summary on Grant Application Form
Vertebroplasty is a keyhole surgery technique that has recently been developed for the treatment of fractures of the spine. Early clinical results have been promising, but there are indications that the procedure may cause accelerated fracture of the adjacent vertebrae. A greater understanding of the modified biomechanics of the spine following vertebroplasty is now needed so that the procedure can be fully optimised. The aim of this project is to develop a new automated method of generating computer models of spinal segments for the analysis of the vertebroplasty procedure. The method will be used to create a series of specimen-specific models of the spine both before and after the simulated vertebroplasty. A systematic validation of the models will then be undertaken by direct comparison with experimental results. The algorithms developed will provide a robust computational tool by which the vertebroplasty procedure can be optimised as a clinical treatment. This proposal will mark a significant advance in the use of computational methods for spinal research and will have extensive uses in the development of new spinal treatments as well as in patient-specific modelling.
