This application is for a visiting fellowship to allow Prof. Fabrice Pierron from ENSAM in France to spend one year at Bristol University collaborating on novel ways of measuring mechanical properties of fibre reinforced composite materials. The Virtual Fields Method (VFM) is an exciting technique based on the Principle of Virtual Work that overcomes the requirement to have uniform stress fields in mechanical tests. Assumed virtual strain fields are combined with real measured full field strains to yield equations from which multiple material constitutive parameters can be extracted from a single test. Prof. Pierron is the leading expert in applying this method to composites, and there is an excellent match with the strong composites testing and analysis experience at Bristol University. This is an excellent opportunity ax very little work has been done so far in the UK.In-plane testing will be undertaken using the grid method to obtain full-field displacement measurements on an un-notched losipescu specimen ax a baseline. Novel testing configurations will then be explored and the most promising ones implemented and compared against the baseline. We will also work with Airbus and others to use the technique in an industrial environment and disseminate results more widely.
