During the last three years as part of a PhD project we have been investigating the properties of superconductor / ferromagnet / superconductor (SFS) devices in novel geometries and with novel materials. In particular we have succeeded in realising Josephson junctions with pseudo spin-valve barriers which have exhibited a switchable supercurrent. The aim of this proposal is to ensure the continuity of this programme and to perform the necessary experiments required to demonstrate that such devices can introduce a directly controllable n-shift into superconducting circuits. To achieve this we will systematically study the effect of layer thickness' on the critical current modulation, and design and fabricate an appropriate n-squid measurement circuit. The project also aims to conduct detailed measurements of the dependence of the critical current and phase shift on the misorientation angle of the two ferromagnetic layers.
