The overall aim of this proposal is to develop a step change in UK capability in the area of high throughput (HTP) polymer discovery. The project plan encompasses advances in rapid measurement capability, synthetic methodology, and chemometrics. In particular, we will develop parallel synthetic routes to libraries of end-functionalized vinyl polymers by living radical polymerization, and parallel routes to libraries of condensation polymers by entropically driven ring-opening polymerization (ED-ROP). These libraries will then be rapidly evaluated for properties of interest (phase behaviour, dispersant activity, and polymer deposition) using three new parallel techniques that will be built within the team. The proposed research will combine both HTP science (i.e., rapid acquisition of data and construction of predictive models) and HTP screening (i.e., rapid searching for materials with properties of interest to the industrial collaborators). We have assembled a strong academic-industrial team that is well placed to carry out this research: collectively we have extensive experience in polymer synthesis, polymer characterization, chemometrics, modelling, and the application of parallel synthesis methodology to materials discovery.
