A new technique of measuring very small differences between the flows of two gas streams (Flux Response Technology, FRT) has been developed. Detectable differences are about 5nUs (or about 20 ng/s) in typical flows of 0.5 mUsec. i.e. about 1 part in 10 to the 5. The technique has enabled changes in volumetric flow to be used to make differential measurements in a range of applications. Typically a system is perturbed in some way (maybe pressure, maybe temperature, maybe composition) and the resultant small changes are analysed. The technique can be applied on its own but could also be used as an add-on to existing instruments to augment the amount of information gained. As an example, those monitoring catalytic gas reactions might benefit from such additional information. Also there are new potential applications. These will be tested for feasibility. The Proposal is for a four-year project to develop and build a mobile flux response machine to be loaned, with its post-doc driver, to other experimentalists elsewhere as an add-on to existing instruments and, in the in-between time, for the post-doc to work at Loughborough testing the viability of some of the new potential applications of FRT.
