Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the course is to provide a grounding in the basic physics of semiconductor lasers, and to show how this underpins the simulation and evaluation of working devices and the techniques used for the study of semiconductor gain media. The emphasis is on fundamentals, with further lectures on processing, packaging and thermal issues to ensure students are aware of the engineering context. The course is made up of five units, each made up of four lectures and a review session Intended to provide opportunity for students to reflect on issues from the unit as a whole. In addition to the formal lectures, a visiting lecturer with a background in the industry to give an after-dinner presentation on the broad theme of the challenges of the commercial world. Students will be encouraged to bring posters of their own work and a poster session will be organised. The course is intended forgraduate students working on both experimental and theoretical aspects of diode lasers, and research staff in universities or industry who need to strengthen their knowledge of device fundamentals. The prerequisites are an undergraduate knowledge of semiconductor physics and the basic principles of lasers.
