Summary on Grant Application Form
Recent experiments on nanoscale systems and ultracold gases have been pushing back the frontiers of size and temperature respectively. In the course of this work, striking parallels with more traditional subjects in condensed matter physics have emerged. However, full advantage of these analogies has not been taken, since the relevant communities are largely disconnected. This Advanced Fellowship proposal aims to correct this situation by exploiting known techniques in condensed matter theory (as well as developing new ones) to describe quantum dot and atom-trap experiments. Specific attention is paid to two key examples: the Kondo effect in quantum dots, and the properties of trapped Bose and Fermi gases in optical lattices. These are chosen not just for their topicality and technological importance, but also their potential to provide testing grounds for the development of more far-reaching theoretical approaches.
