Summary on Grant Application Form
Exploration of fundamental science of nanoscale systems using advanced equipment developed in collaboration with the Tokyo University and the manufacturer. In particular, investigations will be of the electronic properties (such as superconductivity) of the nanoscale systems produced. The project will involve the development of nanotube manipulation devices, as a means to control the processes by which a nanotube can be manoeuvred into electronic devices.Sussex will assist in the production of nanotubes for the needs of different research groups associated with Tokyo University and explore possible avenues for further research. This will involve the synthesis of novel nanoscale materials from the various productions methods available (such as arcdischarge, laser ablation, chemical vapour deposition and pyrolysis routes). Tokyo will be investigating the laser ablation of chemical systems within super-critical carbon dioxide cells, which has been reported to have unusual effects on the chemical systems contained within.Focus will largely be in the area of bio-nanotechnology in order to learn, develop and integrate the ideas back in the UK. In particular the development of chemically modified nanotubes to assist the growth of nerve cells, the linking of nanotubes to biological and bio-chemicals such as DNA & proteins and the physiological effects of modified nanotubes within biological systems, such as extremophiles (solvent resistant bacteria). The Overseas Travel Grant will be used to support 4 persons (outstanding Sussex DPhil students and post-doctoral researchers) travelling from the UK to stay in Japan for 3 months each. An 18 month window for the project will give the greatest flexibility for the students & researchers to travel and this grant will solely support their travel & living needs.
