The potential of metal-containing clusters and cages as new catalysts has been discussed for some time. However, this potential has yet to be fully realised, despite the fact that certain important metalloenzymes (eg nitrogenases, hydrogenases, hydrolases and carbon monoxide dehydrogenase) employ iron-sulfurbased clusters to mediate transformations which chemists still find challenging to emulate in the laboratory. We are now at a stage in the development of the chemistry of synthetic iron-sulfur-based clusters where the methodologies to prepare an extensive and structurally-diverse range of clusters has been realised. The crucial question at this stage is not so much can we prepare new clusters, but rather can we predict the reactivity of these clusters before we make them? The aim of our research programme is to develop a sophisticated understanding of the reactions of these clusters and in particular, to understand how changing one metal in a cluster framework can affect the reactivity of the entire assembly. The results will give insights into the action of metalloenzymes and aid the synthesis of clusters designed to have specific reactivities. Being able to predict reactivity from consideration of the metal composition will result in more focussed and targetted research into the synthesis of clusters.
