This proposal is based on the data obtained during an investigation funded from a successful ROPA grant. It Is concerned with identifying the mechanism(s) responsible for the threshold voltage instability observed inorganic MISFETs. We have already established that instabilities in the threshold voltage occur when devices are biased into both accumulation and depletion. It has been reported that the Instability during accumulation arises from bipolaron formation. This cannot be the explanation for the depletion mode instability. We have obtained the first evidence that interface states may be present at the insulator/semiconductor interface in organic MISFETs which could well explain the instability In both modes of operation. We now wish to undertake a more detailed examination of the organic MIS interface using electrical admittance spectroscopy and sensitive surface analytical techniques Including AFM, SNOM, Kelvin Probe Microscopy, Raman microscopy, optical spectroscopy and XPS/UPS to establish the presence of interface states and their possible role in threshold voltage Instability. The collaborations envisaged during this programme match well the aims of Phase 2 of the Carbon-based Electronics initiative by further enhancing the links already established in Phase 1 as well as developing further links with young researchers both in the UK and abroad.
