Guest-host liquid crystal devices operate by reorienting an anisotropic absorber (the guest) which is dissolved or dispersed in a liquid crystal host. The orientation of anisotropy of the guest is aligned with and follows the orientation of the director of the host. Thus far, using molecular dyes, guest-host liquid crystal devices have had limited commercial success, mainly because suitable material properties have not been attainable. There are several important requirements for a guest-host system:Physical and chemical stability of the guest-host system, especially photostability Concentration of the guest - to get a sufficiently high absorption in a thin layerDichroic ratio - to get a good contrast, the guest must be well ordered in the host, and must have a high ratio of absorption between orthogonal directions.Viscosity of the mixture - if this is too high, the system may switch too slowly to be of use.This project is concerned with replacing dyes in guest-host devices with absorbing nanoparticles. This project will generate, screen and study a wide range of material systems to assess whether pigment-based guest host liquid crystal devices may meet the above criteria.
