This proposal seeks support for the establishment a China Manufacturing Network (ChiMNet) under the EPSRC Engineering Programme Network Scheme. The network builds on the links established by the Cambridge Centre for International Manufacturing in recent years with its academic and industrial partners. Support would not only allow a formal co-ordination between the partners from different disciplines, countries and industries, but also the development of a comprehensive programme of events and research activities in both the UK and China. China's manufacturing capacity and capability have grown dramatically in recent years. Manufacturing companies are increasingly drawn to China not simply for cost reasons but to access a growing market and high quality rapid-response manufacturing capability. Most major multinational corporations (MNCs) have an established presence in China. However, there is increasing evidence that smaller companies seeking involvement with China find it difficult to access the necessary guidance and support and there appear to be few opportunities for sharing experience. UK relationships with China have improved significantly in recent years and there is enthusiasm on both sides for improved commercial, technical and manufacturing links. Commercial and technical links are already reasonably well served. But manufacturing has received much less attention despite its potential importance. Particular areas of interest include China as a base for Far Eastern operations and Chinese manufacturing as a complement to UK based high-tech development .
