Summary on Grant Application Form
In both manufacturing and service organizations, computer simulation models of products or facility operations are often used to test proposed improvements. When there are many potential factors that could provide improvement, experiments must be planned or designed to identify factor levels that will maximize the performance while minimizing the variability of the simulated product or operation. The goal of this research is to develop a sequential (automated and adaptive) experimental design strategy which will identify important factors, and estimate their effects on both the average performance and the variability of performance for a large number of factors (15-100). The result of the proposed research will be an experimental design and analysis algorithm which can be implemented in a computer controller and that can automatically run simulation experiments until a desired computing budget is expended or a desired precision of estimates of effects is reached. It will be assumed that the controller will be able to set the factors in the simulation and the number of replications at each design point and be able to gather information about previous simulation runs. The methods and algorithms will be developed and tested through prototype code.
