Numerical methods based on wavelet analysis have proved useful in applications such as signal processing, image processing and the solution of complex systems of partial differential equations. The excellent localisation properties of wavelets as compared to traditional Fourier methods have proved valuable in the analysis of turbulent flow. The principal aim of the present proposal is to make use of wavelet methods to improve the modelling of turbulent energy transfer for Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of turbulent flow, and of turbulent scalar transort and reaction for turbulent combustion.Existing DNS databases available at Cambridge will be exploited using wavelet tools to produce turbulence scaling information. A wavelet-based modelling framework will be established, and comparisons with existing models will be used to obtain insight into the physical behaviour and its parameterisation. The unique properties of the wavelet decomposition will be exploited to link the model very closely with its numerical and computational environment. Further statistical information from DNS will be used to support the development of turbulent combustion modelling based on the concept of flame surface density. A wavelet-based flamelet library will be contructed in order to summarise local flame properties and scaling information for LES. The new modelling will be implemented in a wavelet-based code developed at UMIST and will be validated using simple test cases.
