Summary on Grant Application Form
The UK Open Middleware Infrastructure Institute (OMIT) will become the principle source for reliable and interoperable Grid middleware for UK researchers and companies. It will achieve this by delivering on the four above mentioned objectives.The OMIT repository will contain much of the currently funded e-Science software in development. This software will be evaluated and tested, with both the software and evaluation results available from the OMIT repository. The OMIT roadmap will be publicly available, together with fully functioning, tested and integrated distributions. The initial version of the roadmap will be published in January 2004 and the first software components shortly thereafter.Users of the OMIT software distributions can be assured of quality software through open publication of our software development process, software grading and full test results for all software. Key members of the OMIT have specific experience in industrial software development. We will also leverage the wider development community through open source software development.The OMIT intends to lead the evolution of Grid Middleware through an open consultative process with major software vendors and major UK, EU and US projects. Many of these relationships are already in place. The OMII will further issue specific calls for proposals in areas where gaps exist in the required infrastructure to support e-Science and industry.Continued financial support for the OMIT after year three is planned through a wide and diverse range of funding sources. The OMIT consortium include key personnel that have substantial experience in this area.
