Summary on Grant Application Form |
Our proposal is based around the completely new post of Public Awareness Scientist (PASc), a full-time young postdoctoral scientist whose role is to promote public awareness to schools, to young people and to the wider public. The PASc will support, assist and catalyse the involvement in public awareness activities of academics, postgraduates and students from the School of Chemistry in our University. Specifically, the PASc will develop five new activities. (1) Chemistry through Childrens' Eyes , a new approach to science talks in primary schools, (2) Research Twinning , a major extension of the existing Researcher in Residence Scheme, aimed at involving Year 7 & 8 pupils in the excitement of ongoing chemical research. (3) How Would You Do It? , involving primary pupils suggesting their solutions to topical scientific/technological problems and publicising their suggestions via the BBC Radio Nottingham website (4) Cafe Junior, adapting a French idea to UK schools to encourage Year 11-13 pupils to debate scientific issues and (5) Chemistry Goes Live , miniaturising lecture demonstrations so that they can be performed safely almost anywhere while still retaining their excitement and visual impact. Each activity involves the participation of one or more PA experts to maximize our chances of success.
