Electrochemical technologies have progressed steadily for over a century and are embodied in the myriad of battery powered consumer goods that fulfil our gadget driven lifestyles, yet few people understand the basic principles that underpin the science. The ubiquity of mobile phones and the everyday rituals of recharging handsets have, however, indelibly imparted the key limitations of electrochemical power on the general public. An awareness of electrochemical technologies is clearly present across society and it is the intention of the present proposal to build a greater appreciation of electrochemical research upon this foundation. This will be achieved by the creation of an interactive display, which will be proactively maintained by both research groups. Particular emphasis will be placed on the areas of biosensors and fuel cells, which are the applicants key research areas and are both dynamic technologies for the future. The monthly market in Guildford town centre will be used to provide the focal point for the display, which will ensure a high throughput of people covering a variety of socio-economic groupings (encompassing office staff, shoppers, and schoolchildren). The stand will be supported by a regularly updated website, which will provide further details of these exciting areas.
