Summary on Grant Application Form
The Storage Resource Broker (SRB) developed by the San Diego Supercomputing Centre (SDSC) is a professional tool for large scale storage management and data sharing. It has been part of the UK e-Science Starter package from the beginning. However its uptake by the UK community is currently slowed down by two shortcomings: a) one central Metadata catalogue (MCAT), required for all interactions with SRB and b) limited accessibility of SRB functionalities through Grid based interfaces e.g. web or grid services. CCLRC in collaboration with SDSC will develop a federated MCAT to allow site based control over resources, while retaining the overall collaborative features of SRB. It will also improve performance and reliability at the same time. CCLRC will in particular ensure that the resulting software addresses the needs of the UK e-Science programme and support SDSC in the design and testing phases. For a better integration with current grid developments CCLRC will extend and improve the existing web services interfaces to SRB functionalities and introduce a new grid authorisation framework into SRB. CCLRC will further endevour to improve the general performance of the MCAT server. Finally it is planned to develop a training programme for SRB operators together with SDSC and NESC.This application is for travel money (+ a small amount for equipment) only, all man power effort will be funded by CCLRC and SDSC.
