Summary on Grant Application Form
To create and consolidate a network to ensure collaboration of materials scientists and engineers with the mining and mineral processing sectors. The collaboration will include academe, government laboratories and research organisations as well as industry, in order to develop and access new research findings and respond jointly to new opportunities in the areas relating to the sustainable use of materials. There is a strong need within the mining and minerals sector to act co-operatively in order to identify, develop and transfer technology within the sector and between other industrial sectors. The main objectives of this proposal are to provide a vibrant interactive forum for material scientists/ engineers and representatives of metals and minerals sector; exchange new ideas, highlight opportunities relating to technology, research and industrial development through meetings, seminars; organise a series of networking meetings focused on a key topics; bring key external expertise into networking meetings from EU and US to enhance best practice; facilitate appropriate feasibility studies and/or reviews/ surveys for the joint benefit of the members; encourage and arrange secondment and work placement for academic staff and students in the industry; to grow the membership base through sector/topic specific initiatives via publicity (Newsletter) and web-based resource materials; to act as a launching pad for developing research programmes within the network based on Knowledge Transfer Partnerships and conventional responsive mode or collaborative funding routes; provide an effective conduit to existing relevant professional institutes and bodies, especially in EU
