|
The recycling and recovery of end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) Directive requires vehicle manufacturers to bear the full cost of taking back ELVs from 2007. This burden is further increased by the need to comply with European directives on electrical and electronic equipment, and to restrict the use of hazardous substances in manufacturing operations. The strategies, technologies and infrastructure to meet the challenges are of significant concern for the volume of manufacturers in the automotive industry. The overall challenge is the need to design materials/components that can be assembled and disassembled cost-effectively, to provide an attractive road vehicle when new and a set of materials / components that can be recycled or reused at end-of-life. In general terms, Germany has led the way in developing the technologies and infrastructure for recycling.DRIVENet will establish in the UK an inter-university, multi-sector and multi-disciplinary Network to address strategies, emerging issues and the development of a research agenda for the design of road vehicles and an effective recycling infrastructure. The technical issues are many and various, driven by cost. Cluster groups will be formed that will align technical experience and expertise within a 3-phase programme. Outputs from these groups will be disseminated electronically via the website, in hard copy and at seminars, and such outputs will inform the research agenda, policy makers and standards developers.
