1. To develop asymmetric aluminum oxide hollow fibres with controlled mesoporosity as a support layer.2. To develop composite hollow fibre membrane reactors for application in dehydrogenation reactions: (a) by deposition of a Pd-Ag hydrogen separation layer onto the outer surface of the hollow fibre, plus (b) by deposition of a coking-resistant dehydrogenation catalyst, based on nanocrystallites of Pt-Sn alloy, onto the inner surface of the hollow fibres.3. To test the effectiveness of the new reactor in two dehydrogenation reactions: (a) propane conversion to propene and (b) methylcyclohexane conversion to toluene.4. To characterise using a range of techniques, and subsequently improve, the structural properties of the composite hollow fibre membrane reactor. 5. To develop transport models capable of predicting membrane permeation flux of hydrogen for a given set of operating conditions. 6. To develop and verify a process model of the reactor and use it for optimisation of the two dehydrogenation reactions under study.
