Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal, as a Platform Grant, is not for a specific project, but for an approach and the flexibility to move research on contaminated land and groundwater forward on a broad front. The assessment of risk from such pollution remains an inexact science, there are few reliable methods of clean-up, and the liabilities associated with land ownership can be very high and inhibit redevelopment of brownfield sites. The research issues concern many aspects, from a poor understanding of the processes occurring at the scale of bacterial cells during biodegradation, to the integration of these small-scale processes over complete catchments. Our philosophy is to simultaneously research science issues and potential field applications. This will be within the context shaped by environmental policy of the government, the regulatory framework of the Environment Agency, and the social science constraints of finance, planning and attitudes. Projects will range from laboratory experiments on model systems to find quantitative descriptions of biodegradation and other processes, to science-based for the management of land-use at catchment scale in order to comply with the Water Framework Directive.
