An approach to the isolation and characterisation of a fundamentally new class of polyoxometalate (POM) clusters will be developed as new types of acylation catalysts that can, for the first time, address the problem of catalyst deactivation by providing a direct 'in-situ' route to catalyst reactivation, as well as tailoring selectivity. This will be achieved by designing catalytically active POMs that can have their intrinsic Lewis acidity 'switched' temporarily by the application of a stimulus; thus weakening the product catalyst complex, allowing product release. Also, routes to produce different types of heterogeneous catalysts (supported and cross-linked in micro/mesooporous, achiral and even chiral arrays) will be devised.This work will mark a paradigm shift in the assembly of truly tailor made catalysts, working towards the ultimate 'green-chemistry' goal in Friedel Crafts chemistry; to finally move from 'over-stoichiometric' catalysts to those capable of true catalysis used on an industrial scale, with excellent conversion and selectivity, fulfilling the green ideals of reducing pollution, consumption of energy and raw materials and increasing atom conversion.
