Summary on Grant Application Form
A paradigm shift to 'more-electric' technologies is likely to occur in many market sectors, such as automotive, aerospace, marine and manufacturing, in which many applications will be safety critical and demand high integrity systems and sub-systems. The research to be undertaken will lead to the development of novel electrical machines/actuators and power electronic converters, as well as fault detection and reflexive control techniques for use in such applications, such that if a fault occurs it will have a benign influence or fail-silent. In many applications, the significant technological challenges are often compounded by harsh environmental and operating conditions, which must have minimal impact on system reliability and performance. Thus, the research also features multi-physics modelling and real-time thermal management. The Platform Grant will aid the retention of key research personnel and stimulate further links with other academic and research groups.
