This proposal outlines a programme of work designed to develop a series of clean and efficient organocatalysed asymmetric C-C bond forming processes. Initially we propose to undetake a study aimed at defining the scope of quaternary ammonium salt catalysed Michael Additions. We then plan to extend the utility of this chemistry by extending it to the preparation of highly-substituted pyrrolidines. Next, we plan to develop a series of asymmetric catalysts that allow control of the stereochemical outcome of the reactions. Finally, we plan to demonstrate that the resulting synthetic methodology is applicable in the synthesis of chiral products that are of direct interest to the pharmaceutical and biotech. industries.
