This research project represents a highly speculative, but rational assembly of green steps to develop a uniquely green method of generating important industrial products. An innovative, tandem reaction is proposed, involving close collaboration between chemists and chemical engineers, which comprises the combination of two atom efficient reaction steps (isomerisation and telomerisation) in a single pot to generate important functionalised organic molecules, primarily for the use in the surfactants industry. In the key reaction, renewable resources such as unsaturated long chain fatty acids esters and sugars will be isomerisaed, and then telomerised to form biodegradable detergents and emulsifiers. An innovative approach to reactor type, reactor medium and product separation will be developed to emphasise the greeness of the methodology. In further speculative aspect, if the general tandem reaction (isomerisation/ telomerisation) proves successful it will create broader opportunities for the atom efficient production of new molecular species, including functionalised polymers, from a single substrate.
