A high-throughput sampling system will be designed and constructed for rapid structure/function studies of arrays of samples that are unsuitable for established high-throughput diffraction techniques, i.e., systems lacking sufficient long-range crystallographic order. X-ray spectroscopy (EXAFS, XANES) at appropriate synchrotron facilities (SRS, ESRF and Diamond) will be combined with Raman spectroscopy to probe the structural properties (local structure, chemical state of individual elements, functional groups, phase composition). In addition to non-crystalline condensed matter (solutions, glasses, homogeneous catalysts), we intend to screen complex interfacial systems, including gas/solid (heterogeneous catalysts, electrocatalysts), liquid/solid (nucleation in solution, precipitation of amorphous phases) and liquid/liquid systems (liquid crystals, surfactant-stabilised formulated products). Processing parameters that will be varied in parallel will be (i) chemical composition of the samples, (ii) temperature as well as (iii) composition and flow rate of the mobile phases. A new capillary sensor system will be developed to combine the electron-yield method of detecting X-ray absorption spectra with simultaneous mass spectrometry sampling of reaction products in the gas phase. E-science methods of remote experimental control and of the collection and processing of data arrays from simultaneous measurement techniques will be developed to achieve a high degree of efficiency and user friendliness.
