The Discovery Net UK e-Science pilot project funded by the EPSRC has developed a grid-service based computing infrastructure for high throughput informatics. The infrastructure has been designed and implemented based on a workflow model allowing the composition of data analysis services and resources declared as grid services. The project is building a series of testbeds in different application areas including Life Science, Environmental Modelling and Geo-hazard Modelling. The first prototype of the Discovery Net based on the Life Science Testbed system was awarded the Most Innovative Data Intensive Application Award in the ACM Supercomputing 2002 (SC2002) conference and exhibition held in November 2002 in Baltimore, USA.We have identified seven such projects who have expressed their strong interest in establishing research collaborations for making use of Discovery Net technology and infrastructure. These projects are either developing complimentary technology to Discovery Net technology, are natural end users to such technology, or both.Part of the travel funds sought in this project will be used to support both a series of academic visits (inward and outward) between Discovery Net researchers and researchers in the identified sister projects. The aim of these visits is to promote the use of the Discovery Net infrastructure at such institutions, and to establish a global discovery net infrastructure with distributed knowledge discovery servers executing in distributed locations. A series of case studies based on the facilities of the infrastructure will be developed and demonstrated at the Supercomputing Conference Series. Another part of the travel funds will be used to organise a series of mini-workshops bringing the researchers from the different projects together.
