Summary on Grant Application Form
The three permanent members of the Solar Imaging Research Group at the University of Bradford bring together excellence in several research areas of solar physics, solar feature recognition and image analysis and the experience of collaborating with many UK and European Universities, BP, Shell expro, DERA, Eureka Museum etc.The group holds an EPSCR project on plasma physics (PI- VZ) in application to solar and laboratory plasma (ends 28/02/05), held a few other projects funded by EPSRC. The group is also a leading partner in the solar feature recognition (PI-VZ) of the EGSO project funded from the European Commission, Framework 5 (ends on 28/02/05). The small part of EGSO project is dedicated to automated detection of some solar features responsible for the solar activity. This work has revealed a growing interest and practical need to automated detection of solar and planetary features for a fast reliable forecast of the space weather. In this proposal we are requesting travel funds which will allow all us to extend the automated recognition techniques to the most solar and planetary features and to some terrestrial features observed from the space. These funds will enable the Solar Imaging Group to raise its own profile and that of the UK research in solar feature recognition by visiting partners in mainland Europe. We will co-write proposals with other European and UK partners (non EC funded US collaborators) to attract EU Framework programme 6 funding.
