In industrialised countries, corrosion costs about 2-3% of GNP per annum and, consequently, large sums are spent every year in its mitigation. Thus, in order to increase awareness of the importance of corrosion from an early age, we propose to focus on the KS4 curriculum component covering corrosion and related topics in science and technology. We will develop teaching and learning materials and activities, gaining students' (and teachers') interest by producing 2-3 Case Studies highlighting the role of materials corrosion in industrial disasters and accidents. However, recognising that high-quality materials are insufficient in themselves, we will also undertake subsidised training workshops for teachers and, taking the cue from the successful PRI initiative, will train PG research students to undertake schools outreach activities including a 10-15 minute classroom demonstration of corrosion in action. We would intend that an identified subset of the material would also be easily accessible to KS3 levels. We will also devise an extension activity suitable for advanced KS4 and AS level projects that will take the form of an experiment designed to engender a feeling for scientific research. We have a number of partners and collaborators, including qualified teachers, throughout the country and would expect to reach a minimum of 50-60 schools and 1000 school students.
